In July of this year, the BRIDGES Summer School “Building solidarities. Feminist and Anti-racist Practices in Higher Education” will take place online, from 29th June until 23th July. It will be dedicated to promoting equality, anti-racism and the diversification of knowledge in universities through activism and social participation. Is it possible to decolonize education? How to transform the university and learning spaces to eradicate its structural racism? How to combat discrimination in the university from critical, feminist and intersectional perspectives? What everyday practices and mechanisms in classrooms reproduce the social inequalities that occur outside of them? What pedagogical tools and strategies can we use to transform them?
Thanks to BRIDGES alliances between different universities and research spaces and activist and civil society initiatives that work for equality and social rights of migrants and refugees, we propose this Summer School aimed at promoting anti-racist, inclusive and fairer and more egalitarian curriculum in Higher Education spaces. Through the use of participatory and action research methodologies, and thanks to the facilitation of academic and activists experts, the BRIDGES Summer School offers its participants an opportunity to analyze and understand the mechanisms and conditions of institutional inequality that occur in the university, explore and deepen some key theories and concepts of anti-racist struggles, and experiment and put into practice pedagogical methods and strategies that promote equality in and outside the classroom.
The school will be structured around three main axes:
- Diagnosis: Racism and other exclusions in higher education and anti-racist struggles.
- Theories as tools: feminist anti-racist perspectives and concepts.
- Pedagogies and decolonial epistemologies.
It will take place online but if COVID restrictions make it possible, some of the activities might happen in person, locally, in each of the participant cities. During the Summer School, work will be done collaboratively and methodologies of Participatory Action-Research will be used, which include: reading and viewing of materials, online discussions , round tables, autonomous team work, theoretical workshops, activities and games, photographic workshop, and other experimental formats.
